lyrics

In The Morning - words and music by Edward Hartline

There's an old man by the fireplace
His cold hands on a child's face
He's telling him a story from the war
He said they built a wall
And I was born to knock it down
But I'm not a fighter any more

He smiles wide till his eyes are closed
He tells the boy it's time to go
He's tired and it's getting dark outside
The rain won't stop but the fire dims
His fingers trace his coarse worn skin
He's watching the light leave his eyes

He says, maybe I'll be stronger in the morning
And maybe there's a story I haven't told
Maybe I've got so much left to tell him
Maybe I'll live to let him know

There's an old man in an empty house
With doors that moan when you're walking out
He's watched his whole life slide right down the drain
They say he built his home
With his bare hands lifting stone
He feels it in his bones when it rains

He smiles wide until his eyes are closed
So he don't have to watch him go
When he's tired and the fire starts to die
Then he's all alone again
Just an old man with a fading grin
He's watching the light leave the sky

He says, maybe I'll be stronger in the morning
Maybe tomorrow's gonna show
Maybe this is just how it happens
Maybe I'll live to let him know

He says, maybe I'll be stronger in the morning
Maybe I'll be wiser in a day
Maybe this is just part of healing
Maybe it'll all go away

There's an old man by the fireplace
With his cold hands resting by his waist
He's not a fighter any more
